The Section of Nephrology has extensive programs in patient care, research, and education. We are committed to excellence in each of these three activities with the goal for both our faculty and our trainees to be national and international leaders in the field of academic nephrology.

The patient care services provided by the Section of Nephrology cover all aspects of our clinical discipline including acute kidney injury, glomerulonephritis, vasculitis, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, hypertension, genetic kidney diseases, renal complications of pregnancy, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and renal osteodystrophy. We provide primary care to a large group of patients with end–stage renal disease (ESRD) treated with hemodialysis and we have a very substantial peritoneal dialysis program. In addition, we have the largest renal transplantation program in New England.

The research activities of our faculty cover a broad range of topics in renal physiology and nephrology from laboratory bench to patient oriented investigation. Current areas of research focus include studies of the mechanisms of acute kidney injury and repair, molecular genetics of polycystic kidney disease and other cilia related disorders, renal tubular electrolyte transport and acid base regulation, renal epithelial cell biology and morphogenesis, and biomarkers in acute kidney injury and other kidney diseases. In addition to a large spectrum of research projects supported by individual NIH research grants, the Yale Section of Nephrology is home to two NIH-funded centers of kidney disease research excellence, the George M. O’Brien Kidney Center at Yale and the Yale Center for the Study of Polycystic Kidney Disease.  In addition, the Program of Applied Translational Research recruits scientists and trains students in methods of translational research and offers access to a large biorepository of samples and national databases for research projects.

Our postdoctoral fellowship training program is designed to prepare fellows for academic and/or clinical careers in the disciplines of nephrology and hypertension. We offer training opportunities in combined clinical and research aspects of nephrology, including bench and patient oriented investigation, as well as in clinical nephrology alone. Research training is supported by a training grant from the National Institutes of Health. We have a broad range of mentors both in the Section of Nephrology as well as in other departments. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in the Investigative Medicine Program leading to a Ph.D. in either laboratory or patient–oriented research, pursue training in Health Services through the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program , or obtain a MS degree in Epidemiology and Public Health through the Yale School of Public Health . The breadth of training opportunities at Yale allows fellows the flexibility to configure their research training in ways that best meet individual career goals.
